Intralase LASIK Technology

Mandel Vision™Now Offers the Ultimate Advancement in Laser Vision Correction: IntraLase Blade-Free LASIK
  1. What is IntraLase, the all laser LASIK treatment?

LASIK surgery requires the creation of a corneal flap, which is thinner than a hair. Until recently, the most accurate method to create this flap was with a mechanical microkeratome. This is a precise microscopic blade occilating at a very high rate. This method is still an excellent treatment option for many patients. However, the ‘bladeless’ IntraLase treatment has offered Dr. Mandel and his patients a breakthrough to help those patients who were not optimal candidates for flaps created with a blade. This advancement allows for more predictable flap diameters, flap thickness and smoother corneal beds. Only an individual consultation with Dr. Mandel can determine your best treatment option.

The U.S. Naval Medical Center and Air Force are now recommending wavefront guided, IntraLase LASIK for their aviators wishing to undergo laser vision correction. In night driving tests that reproduced aircraft landing scenarios, aviators treated with the IntraLase LASIK technique had an improvement in their performance.

  1. Is the All laser LASIK best for me?

If you have a steep or a flat cornea, IntraLase may be your best option. Many patients have a higher level of confidence in an all laser treatment. In some patients the IntraLase provides an extra level of safety and a potentially more accurate treatment. During your consultation, Dr. Mandel will determine which technology is best for you.

  1. How does the IntraLase create a flap?

Femtosecond laser pulses are focused in the cornea to precisely create a corneal flap. Dr. Mandel individually designs the measurements of flap thickness, diameter and hinge position for each patient. The laser precisely photodisrupts the cornea at a predetermined level to create an exquisitely smooth corneal flap.
