Your New York LASIK Experience

Your LASIK Experience with New York LASIK Surgery and Dr. Eric Mandel

On this page, the step-by-step process of undergoing LASIK surgery, from your initial consultation to follow-up care, is explained. As an experienced LASIK surgeon serving the New York area, Dr. Eric Mandel knows the LASIK experience is most successful when patients are well-informed about the procedure before they proceed with treatment. If you have further questions for Dr. Mandel, please contact our New York LASIK practice.

Step 1: Come to Our New York Office for a LASIK Evaluation

We consider it a privilege to invite you to our New York office to evaluate your eyes for LASIK surgery. The evaluation process is vital to the success of your procedure and will take about an hour and a half.

LASIK Screening

After you complete your evaluation paperwork, one of our laser coordinators will greet you in the waiting room and bring you to the testing area. Our LASIK screening process, which involves a topography session, Wavefront® analysis, and pachymetry measurements, will give us essential information about your eyes. Using these advanced diagnostic tools, we are able to get a representation of the cornea, measure the speed of photons reflecting from the retina, determine the thickness of the cornea, and test pupil size. Then you will be brought to an exam room to begin your LASIK evaluation.

You will then be examined by optometrist Dr. Li or our certified ophthalmic technician, Kim Procci. They will perform a thorough examination of your eyes to determine your prescription, take a medical history, screen you for glaucoma, and dilate your eyes.

Meet with Your LASIK Surgeon

Next you will meet your LASIK surgeon, Dr. Eric Mandel at either his New York or Westchester office. He will evaluate your candidacy for LASIK surgery and answer your questions about the procedure. Remember, there are no silly questions! If your question is important to you, it is important to Dr. Mandel. Dr. Mandel will review all of the LASIK screening tests, personally examine your eyes by a slit lamp microscope, and perform a retinal examination after dilation. After Dr. Mandel examines your eyes, he will counsel you regarding your individual needs and the results of the testing.

The results of testing will usually lead him to arrive at one of three possible conclusions: you are a candidate for LASIK; you did not pass the screening test and are not a candidate for LASIK; or you need to return for further testing. If you do need to return for further testing, we will likely perform a more sophisticated analysis of your eyes called Pentacam analysis to ensure that it is safe to proceed. If you are accepted as a candidate, Dr. Mandel will speak with you about the LASIK procedure, including the risks, complications, and alternatives to consider. After Dr. Mandel's informed consent of the procedure, you will have another opportunity to ask him any questions you might have.

LASIK Counseling

Your next step is to meet with your laser coordinator, who will counsel you on your LASIK experience from start to finish. Soft contact lens wearers need to refrain from wearing their lenses for two weeks prior to surgery, while toric, gas permeable, and hard contact lens wearers should not wear their contacts for at least three weeks. Your personal laser coordinator will give you his or her card so that you will always have a personal contact in the office for any non-medical questions. All of your medical questions will be addressed personally by your expert LASIK surgeon, Dr. Mandel. You are encouraged to call our New York office if you have any questions.

Step 2: The Day of Your LASIK Procedure

On the day of their LASIK procedure, patients are typically excited and nervous at the same time. We at Mandel Vision® believe that if you are confident in the skill of your LASIK surgeon and know exactly what to expect from your LASIK procedure, any anxiety you may feel can be greatly relieved.

LASIK Preparation

When you check in at our New York office for your LASIK procedure, you will be greeted by our receptionist, Danielle, and escorted to the Wavefront® room. We believe our high success rate is due in large part to the fact that we obtain the most up-to-date measurements of your eyes on the day of surgery. This analysis will be used by your LASIK surgeon, Dr. Eric Mandel, to create a customized plan based on the exact specifications of your eye. After Dr. Mandel reviews the results and is satisfied with his findings, you will be sent to the waiting room to await your procedure. You should refrain from reading in the office as this can affect your results.

Next, either Mariebelle or Gabrielle, our laser technicians, will call you into our state-of-the-art laser suite for your procedure. Before you enter the suite, the laser will be calibrated, and all of the tools needed for your LASIK procedure will be prepared. After your name is confirmed, you will take a seat in the laser chair. We will administer a disinfectant preparation to your eyelid area and instill drops to numb your eye. To make the process more comfortable, you will be given a teddy bear to hold and you will hear music in the background.

LASIK Procedure

Your LASIK surgeon, Dr. Eric Mandel, will then enter the room and confirm your measurements prior to treatment. To help you relax, Dr. Mandel will talk to you throughout the process, but his concentration will always be on your LASIK procedure.

Dr. Mandel will ask you to open your eye and focus on a flashing light. A lid holder will keep your eye open, and Dr. Mandel will ask you to tell him when the flashing light disappears. You may feel a slight pressure around your eyes. The exam chair will be rotated toward the IntraLase laser and will then be rotated back to the VISX Star S4 excimer laser. You will then hear the sound of the laser and notice the smell of the laser gases.

After less than a minute of laser time (in most cases), you will feel the sensation of cool water and eye drops being instilled. In Dr. Mandel’s hands, the entire procedure takes less than 5 minutes from beginning to end.

Step 3: What to Expect After Your LASIK Procedure

Post-operative Instructions

Immediately following your LASIK procedure, you will be escorted into an exam room at our New York office where your LASIK surgeon, Dr. Eric Mandel, will examine your eyes under the slit lamp microscope. Following that, a LASIK consultant will provide you with your post-operative kit including your drops, sunglasses, goggles, and written instructions.  Almost all patients are given both steroid and antibiotic drops in addition to lubricating drops. Before you leave the office, your post-op visit for the following day will be confirmed, and you will receive a sheet explaining your eye drop regimen for that day and the next morning. Some patients use RESTASIS® drops, as well as lubricating ointment, to improve their tears.

When you return home from our New York office after LASIK surgery, you should close your eyes for at least four to six hours.  You will notice that this time passes most easily if you are sleeping. If you cannot fall asleep, you may find that listening to music is also a relaxing way to pass the time.  Your vision may be blurry during the first day, which is normal, or you may feel as though you are looking through the bottom of a soda bottle. This is because your cornea will be swollen.  Usually vision begins to improve about six hours after your LASIK surgery.  Nearsighted patients tend to experience improved distance vision sooner than farsighted patients. It is normal to have fluctuating vision that varies throughout the day, from light to dark, and from eye to eye.  Red spots that appear on the white part of the eye post-operatively are perfectly normal. Do not rub your eyes and be sure to sleep with your goggles.

Dr. Mandel will call you that evening to see how you are feeling and answer any questions you may have.

Follow-up Care

In almost all cases, your LASIK surgeon, Dr. Eric Mandel, will personally meet with you during your post-op visits to our New York or Westchester office.  LASIK patients are seen the day after their procedure and again within a week. Dr. Mandel will advise you on the use of drops, explain what you can expect from that point, and schedule your next follow-up. During the first week, we ask our patients to abstain from using eye make-up completely, and during the first month we advise you not to let water from your shower head hit your eyes directly, even when your eyelids are closed.

The healing of your eye following LASIK continues for many months. Therefore, you will experience changes in your vision during that time. Most LASIK patients are able to return to work the following day.

We hope that this brief outline of what you will experience at our New York office before, during, and after your LASIK surgery will be helpful to you. Again, it is a privilege to have the opportunity to take care of you and we look forward to helping you achieve better vision. We will always be grateful that you chose us to perform your LASIK surgery; after all, you trusted us with your only pair of eyes.

If you have any questions, please contact our New York LASIK practice.

Your PRK Experience

The Day of Your PRK Procedure

On the day of your PRK procedure, you may be excited and nervous at the same time. We at Mandel Vision® believe that if you know what to expect, your anxiety can be greatly relieved. Remember anxiety is the fear of the unknown, so you will be much more confident if there is nothing that you do not expect.

PRK Preparation

When you check in for your laser procedure you will first be greeted by our receptionist, Danielle, who will call either Nancy or Missy to the front desk to start you on your big day. After making sure that you have completed your informed consent and payment has been finalized, you will be escorted to the Wavefront room. We believe our high success rate is in large part because we take time on the day of surgery to acquire the most up-to-date measurements of your eye. This analysis will be used by Dr. Mandel to design your eye for your customized treatment. After Dr. Mandel reviews the results and is satisfied with his findings, you will be sent to the waiting room to await your procedure. You will be asked not to read in the office, as it can affect your results.

Next, one of our laser technicians, either Mariebelle or Gabrielle, will call you into the laser suite for your procedure. After confirming your name, you will be seated in the laser chair. Before you enter, the laser is calibrated and all of the tools needed for your procedure are prepared.
