LASIK and PRK Laser Vision Correction:  Still the Best Choice for Patients

As medical technology continues to change, so do our options for medical treatment, and laser vision correction is no exception.  So, with all the options available today, why does corneal specialist and microsurgeon Dr. Eric Mandel still prefer LASIK and PRK laser vision correction for all his patients who are candidates for refractive surgery? There are actually four key reasons for this.

1. Proven Track Record:

Unlike most of the other options in vision correction, we have long-term data on both LASIK and PRK laser vision correction.  Prior to FDA approval in the U.S., thousands of successful procedures for PRK and LASIK were already completed in Canada with FDA approval in the U.S. following for PRK in 1995 and LASIK in 1999.  So, ophthalmic surgeons have more than 22 years of post-operative data for PRK and more than 18 years for LASIK.  Why is this important?  Our goal is to make our patients happy with their vision for life, not just today.  Having this data enables us to more confidently predict post-operative outcomes both in the immediate and long-term future.

2. Safety:

This data also informs us of the long-term safety implications of both LASIK and PRK, which we simply don’t know when it comes to the newer procedures.  They’re also both considerably less invasive than much of the newer procedures available, such as implantable contact lenses (ICL’s). ICL’s are intraocular procedures, which means they’re performed inside the eye, and therefore have a higher risk for vision-threatening complications such as cataracts, retinal detachment and serious post-operative infections. LASIK and PRK are not intraocular procedures which decrease the post-operative risks.  Click here for a more detailed look at these and more vision correction procedures.

3. Success Rate:

LASIK and PRK are still two of the most effective surgical procedures with a very high success rate.  As we’ve mentioned repeatedly in prior blog posts, laser vision correction is surgeon dependent, so who you choose to perform your procedure matters.  In Dr. Mandel’s hands, the vast majority of patients achieve 20/20 vision or better post LASIK and PRK laser vision correction.

We’ve covered most of the other vision correction procedures in detail in our blog:  The Laser Eye Surgery Message:  Clearing Up the Confusion ~ Blog #2 {The Procedures} However, since that blog was published, a new laser vision correction procedure known as SMILE gained FDA approval, so we’d like to shed some light on that.  Although SMILE may hold some promise in the future, it currently does not correct astigmatism.  Almost all patients have some level of astigmatism, therefore the visual results for SMILE are currently just not as good as LASIK and PRK for most patients.

4. State-of-the-Art Technology

Always at the cutting edge of LASIK technology, we are proud to announce we are the first and only practice in New York to offer an exciting advancement in customized LASIK technology: The iDesign Refractive Studio!

The iDesign is the next generation in customized LASIK treatments which uses a proprietary INSIDE+OUT approach that combines both corneal topography measurements and wavefront analysis. Click here to read more about this exciting new technology.

Conclusion:

In the right surgeon’s hands, LASIK and PRK both still have a proven track record, a superior success rate and have safety on their side.  Additionally, there is new, state-of-the-art technology used exclusively in LASIK and PRK, such as the iDesign Refractive Studio. These are a few of the key reasons why Dr. Mandel still feels these procedures are the best option for patients considering laser vision correction.
