This is blog 2 of a 2-part series on the most frequently asked questions about LASIK eye surgery from our patients. This blog will focus on the LASIK FAQ’s we hear from patients after (post) LASIK eye surgery with Dr. Mandel at our Manhattan LASIK center. If you have questions about the free LASIK consultation, scheduling, or what you can expect prior to LASIK eye surgery, you’ll want to check out the first blog in this series: Top Manhattan LASIK FAQ’s Pre-LASIK Surgery.
How long does it take after LASIK eye surgery to achieve my best-corrected vision?
Our nearsighted patients will see better, although a bit blurry, immediately following LASIK surgery. The dramatic improvement in vision comes the day after LASIK. In fact, more than 99 percent of our nearsighted patients are able to drive* and return to work the very next day.

POST-LASIK FAQ #2:
How many visits will I need after LASIK eye surgery?
Dr. Mandel needs to see you 1 day after LASIK, then at 1 week and for your final visit at 3 months. However, he’s also happy to see you more if you feel you need additional visits. Follow up visits are included in your initial fee for one year from your date of surgery. Beyond that, it’s recommended that you have routine annual eye exams. If Dr. Mandel is a provider for your insurance company, we will bill your insurance for these visits. If he’s not, he offers a discount for his laser vision correction patients. Please inquire with our receptionist for details.
POST-LASIK FAQ #3:
How long is the recovery period after LASIK eye surgery?
Although vision can fluctuate day to day and throughout the day for the first several weeks, our nearsighted patients typically go back to work, drive, work out and resume most of their normal daily activities the day after LASIK. It’s also normal for your eyes to be dry for the first several months following LASIK. Dr. Mandel will tailor your post-operative regimen based on your symptoms.
POST-LASIK FAQ #4:
Are there any restrictions after LASIK eye surgery?
For the first 24 hours after LASIK, it’s important not to touch your eyes. Beyond that, the main restrictions following LASIK are in place to guard against injury and infection:
- No eye makeup: To guard against infection, eye makeup is not permitted for the first week following LASIK. When you do resume your makeup, be careful not to rub your eyes too hard when removing it. We can show you how to do this properly.
- Avoid getting water directly in your eyes: This is also to help guard against infection and is necessary for the first week following LASIK. As for washing your face and showering, just keep your eyes closed and don’t let the water from the shower head hit your eyes directly. Instead, cup your hands and splash water gently on your face for the first week. This also means no swimming, so you’ll want to schedule any beach vacations accordingly.
- Wear protective goggles: Most importantly, wear protective goggles for any contact sports for the first 6 months after LASIK. Also, since waves can be very forceful, it’s recommended that you wear protective goggles when in the water for the first 6 months.
POST-LASIK FAQ #5:
